The BRAT Diet

Which foods are best to eat when your stomach is upset and you are having nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea? The BRAT diet! It isn’t really a diet to help you lose weight and should not be used for more than a couple of days (it lacks some essential nutrients), but it will help soothe your upset stomach and help stop diarrhea. B is for bananas, R is for rice, A is for apple sauce, and T is for toast. Any combination of these foods will help to alleviate an upset stomach since they are bland foods and are easy on the stomach and intestines.

Other bland foods to consider are oatmeal, saltine crackers, and dry cereals (but nothing too sugary). You also want to avoid fatty foods, dairy products, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. If you are vomiting or having a lot of diarrhea, be sure to prioritize staying hydrated. Plain broth, tea, and electrolyte drinks will help to replace the excess fluids you are losing and watch for signs of dehydration: crying with no tears, dry lips/tongue, dizziness or light headedness, and decreased frequency of urination.
